    Where to (re)start renovation

Hi I've got a 1904 mid-terrace, with 3 upstairs rooms, 2 reception rooms, kitchen and a ground floor toilet + extension bathroom. The whole place looks like it's not been touched since the late 60's. My g/f & I were *slowly* improving it until she passed away recently, which has the...

    Move Downstairs Tolilet Upstairs

Hi Can you please advise if it's permissible to remove the ground floor toilet entirely in favour of a new one upstairs? I'd read another web comment where someone thought that if you had a ground floor toilet in place then one had to remain for future access rights. I've had a search...

How To Make Kitchen Cupboard Doors

Thanks for the responses - done it now. The door only needed to be ~8" wide by ~32" high, so I could of used a single board, but I wanted a 'recessed' look with a stile/rails look to it. So, after Jasonb's message (thanks!), I checked my router bits and found a 1/4" rabbetting bit. I used...

How To Make Kitchen Cupboard Doors

Hi I'm after some advice on how best to construct kitchen cupboard doors from scratch, using the kit I have available. Level of skill - I've made a wall-running carcas/cupboard for boiler, belfast sink & washing m/c from hardwood, which is very sturdy, although plain. Noteworthy tools...

    Recommended Power Planer

Hi I'm looking to buy a power-planer. It's to be used for house renovation and general indoor/outdoor construction. Budget is IRO £100-150, but could stetch a bit. 240V. Can I have some recommendations and suggestions please? I'm tempted by this one (D26500K DeWALT Planer)...

Fitting a solid wood work surface

As noted before, the oil is the 'seal'. The oil resists the water penetration, which should gather on the surface much like it would on glass or plastic, then you just wipe spillages off. I oiled mine (Beech) with Rustins tung oil and it works a treat. 3 coats underside, then another 3-5 on...

    Router Buying Advice

Yeah, I'll definately be doing plenty of 5-6" skirting board, plus lots of other joinery. I took a look at the two Trend routers and I'm still really underdecided between the three makes/models! At the moment, the Makita is in third place purely becuase of its smaller plunge depth compared...

Single Cold Radiator - Appears unblocked and no air-trap...?

Firstly, I've done a search on this and have read several responses to similar topics... I have a single cold radiator in the first floor front bedroom - what I imagine to be the 'last in the loop'. The pipes to/from the rad are also cold. The system was installed over the summer and I now...

    Bosun mitre saw, any good?

Scrit's values are pretty good regarding how much you can pack it out - I've only gone up to about 155mm, and I think I could get to 165mm before fouling on the guard. I also think you could go to maybe 210mm if you remove the rear fence. I've just had a look at mine and this has several...

    Bosun mitre saw, any good?

Just to through my 2p into the ring... I bought a Makita LS1040 a few months ago for general DIY & renovation work and am very happy with the quality and versatility of it. So far I've been up to about 155mm thickness on skirting and I think with more packing could increase that a shade. I've...

    Kitchen Wood Worktop, various questions

I'm having a new Beech 'butchers-block' worktop made by my local woodworks. I'll be fitting it myself to the carcases of an Ash sink unit (made by me - go me! :P )... 1. any advice on the specific method/components used to attach the worktop to the unit. 2. what about sealant between (i)...

Air vents in 1930's terrace - can I seal them up?

One thing to consider is whether you have a gas fire (also perhaps other gas appliances) in the room - I have a feeling that you should have some form of ventilation like an air brick or vent near the appliance... can any of the pro's confirm that?
