    Window Widening

I want to make my 6 foot external window into an 8 folding door. I'm assuming the only way to do this is by replacing the existing linel. Is this the only way - or is there such a thing as a lintel extension kit? I'm not sure if it's a Catnic or RSJ at present.

    Replacement Central Heating Thermostat

I have recently moved house. The existing hall thermostat for the heating is about as old as the house - maybe 25 years. It's a Honeywell rotary dial type and buzzes and gets stuck around 20 deg C. I want to replace this with a digital thermostat like: Thermsaver Celect Digital Room...

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

Update - I replaced the bulbs in question again a few weeks ago - with standard 'non cool' lamps. I have had no problem since. Therefore the conclusion must be that the previous owner must have put the 'cool' type lamps in these holders only - therefore overheating the fitting and wiring...

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

Sounds like I need to find these 'cool' lamps. Anyone know a good on-line stockist?

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

Not sure how to quantify plenty of room. All I can say is that it's a typical ground floor installation. The fittings are cut into the plasterboard ceiling of the kitchen. The plaster board ceiling is nailed to the joists for the first floor bedrooms to which the bedroom floorboards are fixed...

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

Thanks for this response - this is great!. To answer - I have no idea what sort of lamps they are - I didn't replace the lamps when I bought the new holders. The fittings are the standard 'can' type. Can you get these 'cool' lamps from B&Q?

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

There's two occupied bedrooms above. No obvious signs of condensation. I think it could be burn - thinking about it. Perhaps these two originally had a lower rating holder than the rest. When i've replaced it, I just asked for a holder - so they probably gave me a 20W holder, when I really need...

    Halogen Pin / holder Corrosion

Have just moved into a new house. The kitchen has 10- 50W halogen down lighters fitted into the plaster board ceiling. Two weren't working when we arrived - so I had a look. The holder (push-in pin type) was corroded and the springs weren't holding the lamps firmly. So I went to an electrical...

    Junction box

I'm a little confused. I want to relocate my electric shower cable run. I therefore need to break the cable add two new junction boxes and extend the route. The shower is 9.5kW, the shower switch is 45 amp, the fuse is 30A at the consumer unit (old style with fuse wire). Am I OK with 30 amp...

    Saniflo

OK - I filled it with water and it seems to be functioning OK. However I run the shower and it's backing up quicker that the pump is starting. I have installed the pipe fall at 25mm per 1m as per the instructions. The manual does mention installing an optional non- return valve - but I can't see...

    Saniflo

Have just bought / installed a wickes Saniflo System. As soon as I turn the power on the pump runs - even though there's no water in it. Anyone got any good ideas?

    45amp Junction Box?

I need to re-route an electric shower cable. The shower is 9.5kW and the shower switch is 45 amp. I can only find 30 amp junction boxes in B&Q. Do 45amp junction boxes exist?

    Wooden Stair tread 'covers'

My wife has seen a picture in a magazine where an existing 1970's carpeted closed staircase has been transformed by removing the carpet and fixing new wooded treads/nosing on top of the existing treads. I can't find such an item anywhere - do they exist or is it something i'll have to make...

    Worcester Bosch Combi

The model is a 240 - is the descaling something a competent DIYer could do - or it is really a job for a professional?

    Worcester Bosch Combi

My oldish Worchester Bosch combi seems to be starting to play up. It's about 10 years old and has never failed - except recently it has decided to fluctate between hot and cold on the hot water delivery to the taps. You get about 1min piping hot water - then it goes to cold for about 30...

    Mixer Shower fixing

I have just purchased a barrel style mixer shower - the type where the on/off tap is on the left and the temperature is on the right. To my surprise there doesn't seem to be any means of fixing it to the wall. I was expecting some kind of hidden wall plate. The only way I can see of fixing it...
