    Dot and Dab

Could anyone tell me what substance is used to to actually bond the plasterboard to the wall when dot and dabbing. And also, can plasterboard be dot and dabbed over an existing (but poor quality) plastering job? Thirdly, can I get away without having to get the plasterboard skimmed...

    Wiring a ring and radial

Wiring the circuit as you suggest defeats, to a great extent, the point of having a ring. The idea of a ring is that a low-rated cable can, using a ring, supply a much higher current, with half the current being drawn equally from both sides of the ring. So that the maximum (theoretical)...

Earth is live on neon screw driver but don\\\'t understand w

What you need to do is test between neutral and earth. Between live and earth there is, obviously, 240v. It may not be EXACTLY zero volts, but no worry so long as the voltage is negligable (i.e. not 240). I wont bother explaining why it may not be 0v, but dont worry either way.

Makes sense. The diagram is meaningless though. I understand it, but dont see the relevance.

    Sealing around a compression joint

Firstly, Plumber's mait will not be "washed away", it will just prove ineffective because it is not designed to be used against pressured. Secondly, if the joints aren't leaking now, they never will. NEVER. I had the same worries when I first started, but the worst you get from compression...

    CENTRAL HEATING

Simple answer. Get a gas fitter to check it out. That is because you are obviously not qualified, and we cannot help any more than the gas fitter would - that is, he will tell you the problem. This is also probably dangerous, so get checked out now.

Ridiculous gas bill..... is my meter knackered?

The cost does indicate that the meter may be malfunctioning, in which case the company should be made aware of the fact, and you should point out that the bill will not be paid until the issue is rectified. However, it does not neccessarily rule out other possibilities. But my money is with...

which way do I turn the valve?

Why does it need to be checked? He has indicated that it needs to be filled, and he has asked what valve position is closed. The reply was accurate, that it is open when inline with the pipe, and closed at right angles. There are no other problems indicated, and it should be an, er...

    Security Light

Yes, it is as common as white bread. Rings are generally only used for sockets, and everything else is radial. It wont hurt to have other circuits as rings though, if you do happen to have them.

    lamp post keys.....

For reference, local street lamps in my area appear to be fed with simple 2.5sqmm T&E, and this fed a 6amp fuse in the lamp. That is, local kids had smashed the cover off the lamp, and I have not been illegally tampering with streetlights.

    Double and single pole

Please, don't. I could call them maybe "switched live only sockets".

    Double and single pole

Funny. Either way, I think the issue has been cleared up - that is, the single pole socket was obviously poorly named.

You might like to know that 1/2 inch is actually roughly equal to 16mm.

    Wiring a halogen transformer

Obviously, for us, there is a lack of information about the installation. Is there a danger of being electrocuted. And, is the transformer supposed to be earthed, or is it double insulated and hence doesn't require earthing.

    Double and single pole

Frankly, I'm not sure if there is such an animal. "As far as I can see..." Do you mean you have the items in front of you? Normally, 'double pole' equipment involves both live and neutral. A double pole isolator would turn off both poles (i.e. live and neutral), whereas single pole only...

    cable formula?

As said, the forumlas would be pretty complex. For the layman however, just err on the side of caution and use a cable with a slightly bigger rating.

Cable size for a 10.5kw shower

I think 10sqmm will do fine for a 10.5kw shower. And by 'will do fine', I mean 'is absolutely essential'. I cannot emphasise enough that you must use 10sqmm for 10.5kw, and probably should use 10sqmm for anything over 8.5kw. Incidentally, 10m of 10sqmm will not be expensive - i.e...
