    Burnt GU10 lampholder & wiring

Question came up when I was about to wire 4 spots from underneath (400mm or so between each) along void with no need to cut through joists he said that these could be wired direct (no Jb's) and there would be less "pull" on the lights - this opened up into general conversation ... if I were...

    Burnt GU10 lampholder & wiring

Thanks got the idea makes sense. Answer another one thats nagged at me for a while, if you will please, sparky once told me that when wiring spots in a chain better to use 1.5 flex (3 core) rather than cable (t/e) - although he did say it was optional - correct?

Can you use artex straight on plasterboard for paint base

When you say it looks awful are you talking wall paper or plasterboard? If you are talking wall paper only, the wall may have been dry lined which is common in europe and getting more common in UK; see for e.g.: -...

Replace wall switches in bathroom cupboard?

Don't panic the shower is still working! Had a idea whilst sitting and thinking on the throne last night. Given that I am going to over clad the airing cupboard door with ply I could also cut it down in height. This to give room for the door to open and clear any pull switch mounted near it...

    wallpapering

Totally agree with idea of plasterboard over, tapered edge (never square edge), screws not nails, stagger joints, self adhesive scrim tape, special filler for joints - no plastering. Check old ceiling reasonably flat before doing anything, artex is used to hide lots of sins, worst situation...

    wallpapering

Couldn't agree more with Zampa, previous owner had - some lining, some wood chip - they had even power sanded some of the walls (dont do this some stuff has asbestos) but it was still awful. Tried removal - my stuff could be removed with hot air gun but it takes forever, not heard any really...

    Heated towel rail

Saga of bathroom continues! (see earlier posts). Have a new problem, grateful for any help. Electrically heated towel rail normal on all the time has recently got too hot to touch (previously you could quite safely put your hand on it but not any more). Have turned it off, just in case...

Thanks. Yes it is structural in that it was built with the house studded -walled, plaster board and plastered over. It currently has (original) louvred door which I am about to ply over (to hide lovures) since they are a dust trap. Zone 3 therefore a spanky( sparky even!!) could run any new...

Replace wall switches in bathroom cupboard?

I am refurbishing a bathroom retiling, replacing lights etc. and have cut a hatch to gain access to a flat cold roof, more on this later. In the bathroom is an airing cupboard one wall of which (studded plasterboard) backs on to the bath. On this wall, mounted above the bath, is an...

    problems with a shower

Like you I had doubts about the necessity of switching the shower off at the pull switch. I was proved wrong. A fault developed with the shower such that with the power on, and the shower supposedly off, but the shower would still get hot and suddenly spurt out scolding hot water - apprarently...
