Wallpapering a conservatory with bare walls

I've "inherited" a bit of a messy conservatory with peeling paint. Upon closer look it was a single coat of white paint and just flaking off. With little effort I've managed to remove it while th a paint scraper. The wall is now bare and I'd like to wallpaper it. I've read an article here that...

    Peeling paint nightmare

Thank you so much Chri5 - super helpful. Yes, it is indeed a rental but I know for a fact the landlady wouldn't do a thing about it. She pretty much said I can do any painting in the house I like to do. The rest of house house is actually ok - just ghastly nasty colours so I'm busy painting over...

    Peeling paint nightmare

I've moved into a property where the conservatory paint was peeling off the wall. I thought it would be a simple job of brushing the dry flakes off, sanding (by hand), washing with sugar soap and painting. I started off by vacuuming the bits on the floor and then realised that most of the paint...

    Intermittent clicking from Smoke Detector

It's a 2 bed flat across 2 floors. There are only 2 wired units in the property. One in the lounge (which the kitchen is adjacent to) and one in the one bedroom. I've simply replaced them with non wired units. I don't know what the fire rules or laws are. But for what it's worth I also have a...

    Intermittent clicking from Smoke Detector

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and ideas. The landlord sent the "electrician" round - but he had no idea how to fix this (and looked at it in great puzzlement). So I simply asked him to switch the off and I've since installed the normal smoke detectors myself!

    Central heating won't turn off

Thanks guys - sorry I never replied. Just wanted to wrap this up by saying that the plumber (who installed it) had to come out and replace something that was actually broken (it looked like that motorised valve). So it's all sorted now and working :-)

    Intermittent clicking from Smoke Detector

Just an "out of curiosity" question - any idea what causes the intermittent clicking? And do you know if they currently function as smoke alarms? I guess the latter would not be able to be answered with certainty...

    Central heating won't turn off

I've just moved into a new (rented) property and the landlord is being supremely unhelpful. The central heating system I have is "Honeywell". My problem: I can't seem to turn it off. There are no instructions I can find. Neither can I find any sort of model number to look it up on the...

    Intermittent clicking from Smoke Detector

I just moved into a new (rented) property and the landlord is being supremely unhelpful. I'm hoping someone here may be able to help out! Anyway, so I have 2 rooms where these units are attached to the ceiling. At random intervals they seem to make quite loud clicking noises (not necessarily...

    Electrics in South Africa

Shucks sorry for the horrendous spelling & grammar in that second paragraph. My pc is still not entrirely happy (need to get new graphics card really as onboard graphics aren't sufficient) and it's causing lag & my screen to jump. Anyway - have had an electrician here twice already. Perhaps he...

    Electrics in South Africa

Hi StelleElectrical. I'm in Durban. May I ask why you're not replacing the UK plugs with SA plugs (and using travel adaptors)? I'or that caed it to malfunction. But the reason for tthat caued it to malfunction. But the reason for that cannot be explained. Quality graphics card - 18 months...

    Electrics in South Africa

Thanks! Will try that. Power supply here in SA isn't great and they randomly cut they power as they please (load shedding?) - no idea if this could have anything to do with it as well. But good thinking - I'll get some of those surge protectors. One more question - is it totally OK to just...

    Electrics in South Africa

Hi. I believe it's 230 Volts (alternating at 50 cycles per second - whatever that means). I've been using bog standard travel plug adaptors (available in travel shops) - such as this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/OMEGA-TRAVELLERS-SOUTH-AFRICA-ADAPTOR/dp/B003NF65DK/ref=pd_cp_ce_2

    Electrics in South Africa

I recently moved from the UK to South Africa and brought all my things here with me. Now I didn't think there'd be a problem using my things here (TV, computers, kitchen appliances etc) but I'm not so sure now. Over the past few months I've lost a laptop, my pc (both 18 months old) and my...

    Coffee Filter working intermittently?

Hi Helpful people! I have a filter coffee machine (brand: Prestige) that's probably no more than a couple of years old and used approx 5 times a week. Lately however it's starting to play up and only works when it feels like. I've checked plug wires, so nothing loose there. When I put it on...

    Repressurise Worcester 24i Junior

Just thought I'd give an update in the interest of those may want to see an outcome. Well....... what I so desperately wanted to avoid, happened in the end  Paid £100 for someone to find the tap to turn! Seriously I can kick myself. My system did not use the plastic key to refill...
