1 way flick switch to dimmer switch

hi guys,

i have just replaced a one way switch with a dimmer switch, now the problem is that the dimmer switch does not dimmer, all the wiring is correct and it is earthed,and the light switches on and off but no dimmer. any idea's please???

Dimmer is knackered? What sort of lights are you trying to dim and what is the load (Watts)

its a standard livingroom light using a 40 watt bulb


i assumed the resister in the dimmer was naff


wired as follows

RED = COM
BLACK = L2

EARTHED

Try a 60 watt bulb and see what happens.

yeah that would be my first suggestion as well - if you've bought an off the shelf single dimmer from somewhere like B&Q they are nearly all 500w units with a minimum of 60w. Was a right pain trying to find one capable of dimming a 40w bulb for our nursery, ended up buying a twin unit and taking one off that and installing on a single plate!
