Hi Guys,
Can I use a 240v 3 pin connector on a 110v supply.
I need to connect from the transformer to the motor.
Cheers,
Phil

Hi,
I've stupidly cut the 110v wire from the 2110v side of the transformer that feeds the 110 motor, (it's earthed therefore 3 wires), and now need to connect them again each time I want to use the motor. I can;t find an American style male and female plug anywhere so thinking about using a 240 3 pin as used on lawnmowers etc. and comes from Maplins, (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/10a-three-pin-flex-connector-white-vj80b).
I just don't know if it'll work and more importantly will it be safe? The motor is only a 110v sewing machine motor that drives a small rod wrapping lathe.
Thanks for any help,
Phil

Simple answer is yes it will work. But one day someone will plug it into the normal 240 volt supply, sods law. So best to use something different.

Something like these would be preferable if you need to unplug it

Does it need to be unpluggable though, maybe a straight through inline connecter. like also used for lawnmowers but (unpluggable) would be better, one rated at 240 volt would be ok for that

They are for a Reduced Low Voltage (centre-tap Earthed) system and so wouldn't really be appropriate for an American appliance.

I'm pretty sure that IEC60320 only codes by voltage, so the same connectors would be used for a 110-0 system as for a 55-0-55 system.

Having said that in an environment where both 55-0-55 and 110-0 are being used and for some reason must not be mixed (e.g. 55-0-55 is being used for safety with portable tools on a building site but there is also some imported equipment that won't work on it arround) then you might want to think about other connectors.

If you really want them you can get them from mouser but the small order handling charge is high if you aren't buying anything else and the prices aren't great either.

The connector will work and will provide adequate protection from direct and indirect contact.

The question you have to ask is what is the risk it will get connected to a 240V supply by mistake. Personally I think provided the machine is labelled as 110V, the regular users of the machine are aware it's a 110V machine and no connectors that are intermatable with the one you use are present in the workshop then the risk of that is negligable.

The construction is exactly the same as the blue 240 volt version with the exception that the keyway is in a different position. They are quite safe on 55-0-55, or 0-110. In fact if the keyway is filed off they will mate with the 240 volt socket. I've seen it done.

As long as not used else where with 230 volt that's what I would do far neater than 110 volt plugs.

Don't forget live and neutral are the other way round on US plugs, live to gold, neutral to silver.

Not all USA plugs have "colour" coded pins.
