13 times life = 12 years.

As far as I am aware, Britain is the only country where you can literally get away with murder.

The CPS, the courts and the parole boards all appear to be in it together. I have often asked myself why they do this and cannot work out any plausible reason.

no wonder the guy done a bunk, bet he couldnt believe his luck.
WHY was he in an open prison if he is a danger to the public??

And people go to jail for not being able to pay their council tax.

I lie awake at night, fearful that a council tax dodger is lurking about......

Yes, it does appear that sentencing is a bit of a lottery. Perhaps the accused could be given a choice of judge, and the sentencing records of judges be published.

I can imagine that the least lenient would be out of a job before long!

Sentencing for most offences is driven by cost. Judges are given a range of sentencing options for each offence and the government is always telling us how expensive it is to keep someone in jail. The same reason why the Lib Dems are stopping the Tories from sending repeat knife offenders to jail.

That maybe so but someone who is given thirteen life sentences?

How can anyone on a parole board or whatever think other than "No, stay inside"?

Brilliant. Why don't we save even more money and close down all the prisons? Offenders could be told to go away and not be naughty any more.

What a silly idea. Let them be as naughty as they like - their antics keep an entire army of public sector bods in jobs

Yes, what am I thinking? Of course, that would explain why so many defence lawyers are so successful in securing lenient sentences from naive judges. It ensures their continued expensive lifestyles.
