Hello,

We've just bought a 1930s semi in the south of Glasgow. We removed some lovely wood panelling from the living room and found what seemed to be a covered up fireplace, so of course, we decided to investigate to see what's been covered up.

Upon removing some of the cement we've found what we think is an old back boiler.

I know this is probably a really difficult set of questions to answer without actually seeing it in the flesh, but I just wondered If anyone has ever removed anything like this before and if so should we expect an old fireplace behind it?

Note: we have two chimneys on the roof however there is no visible sign of a chimney breast. There is what seems to be a lintel there but no real outline of a fireplace.

I've never done anything like this before and i'm a little scared to knock out anything else in case I do some damage.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I think if you remove the cast iron back boiler you will be left with just the builders opening any fire place would have been fitted in front of it with a grate to hold the coal. There will be a couple of large iron pipes attached running up to the airing cupboard and I expect some fixing bolts into the brick.
Be careful of any rope or suspect white material you come across it may well be asbestos!
Not really much point in disturbing it really unless you want to fit a complete new fire place and chair brick in.

Yeah we have pipes running up the left hand side which i discovered this evening however, I've still not found anything that resembles a chimney or chimney breast... So I've decided to stop and just cover it back up. I'm really disappointed because I wanted a fireplace but im just too scared to dig out anymore as I don't have the money at the moment to fix anything if I cause any damage.

Appreciate the reply.
