2 way switched light not working

I think it was brown. I know it is definatley part of the same cable, as I've said I used a multimeter to test the continuity of the 3 wires from the second switch to the first and they are all ok.

Hi, if your "electricians" charged you money and left or perhaps ran ! leaving wiring like that without advising you it was lethal, i would be surprised if they were qualified

DS

Fair enough - but it's still a new one on me. I'm not aware of any other colour core (other than a bare copper earth wire) that one would expect to find in a cable together with a red and a black - Anyone? I take it that you are certain that it is not (as I mentioned earlier) a bare copper-coloured wire?

If you have a feed at the hall all you require are two strappers to the landing switch. You already have the switch wire from the landing light at that point?

Brown sleeve on bare conductor ???
Possibly - but then even more bizarre than an electrician should put blue tape over that brown sleeving! However, as I said originally, I do rather fear that a bare conductor (even if sleeved at the ends!) of T+E may be being used as a live conductor.

To reassure me about my sanity, do you agree with me that no standard cable would have had a third core of any colour (let alone brown), other than a bare CPC, along with a red and black?

Kind Regards, John

Yes agreed. It will be the cpc with sleeving or the insulation of some flex! The "electrician" has put tape on to hold it in place.

Or it's a perished rubber !

I do.
Why do you doubt it?

OP:
Did the 'electrician' not see the junction box?

This seems such a simple job - to find the cause at least, maybe not to cure.

Indeed, as I said originally, that does seem likely - although it's rather ironic that, of all possible colours, the electrician chose to use blue tape ('all he had', I guess!!)!

I thought that I was the only person whose brain/fingers partook of 'semi-phonetic typos' - do I take it that "isolation" should read 'insulation"? :)

You really need to fit plastic switches !

Are you able to install new cables?

Are the earth wires joined under the junction box ?

Thanks. I presumably need not tell you that, when faced with apparently contradictory information, most of us have times when we come to doubt ourselves, no matter how 'certain' we are :)
