2010 version of Word

Office 2010 works fine on W10, that's what I use when I need it. Don't know if it works on 11 but very likely.

Libre Office is pretty good. Mainly I use what evedamadiynot suggests.

I'll ask again. All those people that create those things you enjoy/use to enhance your life - why should the software developers not get paid what they ask? You're happy to pay for the computer the software runs on, and subscribe to the electricity and network it relies on.

Why do you not want to pay for the software that makes it useful?

It's value to the user, depends to a large extent on how much use they can make of it. A big corporation, or a writer, might get plenty of use out of it, so the £85 is worthwhile, covered by the profits they make from its use. Someone, who just uses it for a rare letter of complaint to their MP/councillor, etc., cannot justify the £85. MS, is a vast, and highly profitable company, making billions. As a start-up, the used many dirty tricks, to put competitors out of business, so they could screw the maximum funds, out of their customers.

Again Im stumped as to why people insist on chaining themselves down with huge corporations-is it loyalty, apathy, ignorance?

Another recent thread
I used to deliver animal feeds and one poultry farm we always had to go and find the site manger to tell us which bin to pump the feed into.
The doors were always open and the noise and stench of the creatures in the cages was overwhelming.
But there were always a few birds stood loose inside the doorways and they just didnt have the will or sense to step outside to freedom in the sunshine and fresh air.
I now know them as Microsoft Users.;)

I'm quite happy for those who want to pay every year for MS Office. I'll stick with LibreOffice, thank you.

On average, I pay about £60-65PA for the Office 365 Home (always someone selling the discounted version). I can share my subscriptions with 5 other people- my mum, stepson etc. Each of us get 1Tb of online space. Used to be unlimited but they scaled it back (b'stards).

I compose most of my quotes on my laptop, but from time to time, I need to edit them on my phone. 365 stores my documents in the cloud, I open and edit them on my phone.

I am able to write it off against tax. Yeah, if I wasn't using if for work, I might go for Libre or Open Office.

That said, 365 Personal is only £20 cheaper, I consider that to be over priced (single licence).

A mate of mine works for MS. He was an account manager dealing with a very large police force. His job was to get them to go completely down the MS route. In those days the ANPR was 8 bit software.

He discovered that the ANPR company only had 3 employees.

MS purchased the tiny company.

The MS of old were bully boys, the current MS, less so. MS got their behinds kicked, big time, by the FTC. Now Apple and Google are now the baddies.

What is your point?

I'd like an rare blast in a McLaren F1, but I cannot justify dropping a few million quid on one. I'm not sitting around moaning about how McLaren are a bunch of ripoff merchants looking to scalp me wherever they can though

Tell me more about your life, I'm betting I won't have to listen for long before I discover you purchasing some product or service from a sizeable corp

I do, but avoid it wherever possible and software is one of many such occasions.
HB nor myself is moaning about paying out.(in fact it is you that is moaning about not paying out)

Do you have a Hotmail or outlook email address?
They have the online version of office to use for free

Be aware LibreOffice and OpenOffice will not cope with the fancier MS features. At least they used not to.
Nor will Google's "word" processing function.
Nor will MIcrosoft's Web version.

I sent someone a WORD form to fill in and he couldn't deal with it.
365 family version is not expensive for what you get, imho.. Adobe would rinse you for it.

I used to use £5 versions from ebay. They were single licenses from company mass purchases. They worked fine.
The last I had was Office 2019 I think, Used it for years until I needed a 365 excel feature.

There are many companies on eBay who claim to offer "lifetime" licences for 365. Often, they are organisations who registered with MS and claimed to be educational institutions. They then sell on their "seats" to unsuspecting people on ebay, who, understandably, believe that they are getting a great deal. Once MS discover that they are taking the pee, they, MS, pull the plug and it can be a mare for the customer.

Years ago, she what no longer talks to me (again) had me on her Home 365 account. She had let the subscription expire. I could no longer access my cloud storage. I rang MS and told them that I wanted to pay to have the service reinstated. After about 3 hours (in total) on the phone, they told me that they could not do divest me from her (expired) subscription. I had to ask her to log in and remove me from the shared account. I now share my additional accounts with friends and family. At some point, I need to make sure that they are not in a similar situation if I kick the bucket.
