Thanks @Astra99 , yeah I have a ratchet crimp tool, the Halfords pinch one from the 80's won't cut it!
I have heat shrink tube, I just thought the red ones were quite flimsy that's all, the ones on the old cable seemed more substantial.
Good point on the solder, I'll make sure I do that although they'll be cable tied in place afterwards.
