Hello.

Would 3x3 fence posts be ok or would 4x4 be better?

Also is 1 foot deep ok for 3 foot above land?

Cheers.

I aim for 16 inches depth.

a 4x4 post gives a cross sectional area of 16 sq/inches whereas a 3x3 is only 9.

That makes a 4'' post almost twice as strong and slower to rot away.

In very general terms of course, just to illustrate the vast difference.

I agree that 1.5 foot would be better, the extra effort taken will pay back by the length of time the fence should last.

Same goes for size of post, little bit more work, but a considerably stronger fence for the effort.

A 3x3 would work if you are really on a tight budget, but is it really worth the few extra pounds considering the effort of putting the whole ting up?

I went for 3x3 not due to cost but to space. I know it's only an inch but I don't want to lose too much front garden as having good side my side. Pure clay round my way, dug to 16" so far, may go the extra 2 to get 1.5 foot tomorrow.

Be careful you dont end up losing your four inches of ground to your neighbour, I understand having the "good side" facing you, but by doing that you are marking the boundary as being 4 inches into your property, the fence should bound your land and clearly define your property, by giving your neighbour the staggered face, it implies that the flat face is the boundary.

Just a thought, I may be wrong. :?:
