Quick question please - is it possible to run LED plinth lights in a kitchen directly off the lighting circuit?

Plug is 3A fused to an in-line 12v transformer, rated at 0.022A max.

Due to "U"-shape of kitchen, would need to chase from light switch to an unswitched socket for transformer. Should this still be in 1.5mm? If so, then don't want anyone mistaking this (albeit behind base cabinet) socket in the future and trying to plug something else in to it...

Or am I best to cut plug off and wire into an FCU at that location instead?

Many thanks in anticipation!

If it IS an in-line transformer, cut the plug off and wire into lighting circuit.

Yes you can, its no different to installing (say) 12v downlights.

Cabling on the 230v side should be in the same sized cable as the rest of the lighting wiring. 1mm² or 1.5mm² is usual.

EDIT: Don't forget that this electrical work in your kitchen is notifiable so you'll need to start the process with your local authority's building control dept.

Many thanks for the replies - just wanted to check...

The lights are these:

So to confirm, you'd extend from the light switch to a wall outlet plate in the right location for the transformer?

Have a Building Control Notice already, but simply listed electrics as being undertaken by a Part-P qualified sparky. Have greatly reduced our re-wiring plans (alas cost!) so hopefully Building Control will amend the original application without any additional charge?

It would have to be checked there IS a neutral present at the light switch. Black or blue wires at light switches are not necessarily neutrals.

Should be able to pick up switched-live and neutral at junction box in ceiling?
