Not really - don't forget that you were pretty lucky if you even had one socket in every room in those days (and the upstairs ones were often fed from 'lighting' circuits) ... and it remains the system in many/most countries. Also don't forget that we're pretty unique in having plugs with fuses - in the absence of that, it's not really safe to have multiple sockets per circuit like we do.

And at a princely sum too it would seem! Might just rub a grinder over the faceplate of an ordinary white to roughen it up and then paint it
