In the past couple of weeks I've had quotes from several plumbers. The common feature is that all have complained about being too busy!! I'd say it was a blessing! - it's great to be in demand and even better if you know you're going to do a good job and the customer will be happy. And the pay doesn't seem too bad either!! Even if there's no trade discount on boilers etc. (and probably there is), I estimate the daily labour rate is about £500-600 which is not bad for a one-man operation, even allowing for overheads. I'm not complaining as it seems to be the going rate - I'll be very happy if the job is done well. I've also just been quoted over £400 for a one-day tree trimming operation.
With wonderful hindsight, I wish I'd trained for a trade, not only for financial reasons but for job satisfaction too. What a shame apprenticeships are now thin on the ground.
