but are we better off, is the English language better off, because of the change in what "gay" means?

It's a shame we can't use the word "gay" in its proper sense any more, without being laughed at. Or "queer" for that matter.

I can remember when people used both words in their proper senses. My mum had a "gaybox" on the wall; this was a little shelf unit for ornaments.

"Gay" and "queer" are now words for the same thing. This was not so in the past. If you drank a lot at a party you would feel quite gay after a while, but next morning you would wake up feeling right queer.
