a trip to the crossroads

Such dangerous thoughts.... The people who can afford it to pay more tax. Much better to increase taxation on the poor.Because poverty is what makes a country great.

The people who can afford it to pay more tax.

The "rich" already pay far more tax than the poor.

Someone earning £25K pays just over £5,000 in income tax and NI (and quite possibly gets Tax Credits, Housing Benefit, etc which reduces their net tax bill to virtually nothing!).

Someone earning £50K (twice as much) pays about £14,500 (nearly 3 times as much).

Someone earning £100K (four times as much) pays about £35,000 (seven times as much).

Higher earners don't just end up paying more tax, and don't have access to kickbacks in the form of state handouts, the tax they are forced to pay increases far faster than their income.

If after tax one person has £10,000 and the other has £100,000 and a further tax rate of 25% across the board is announced, who is going to be less able to afford to live in todays economy? The rich should pay more, the super rich who use every dodge going should pay an even higher percentage.

We should find some who can step up to the plate.

Lets see if Cleggy keeps pushing it forward. I might vote for him if he does.

Funny how countries with citizenry that cry "tax the rich" always end up to be countries with high tax and spend, which inevitably leads to high taxes for rich and poor alike.

Be careful what you wish for.

The rich should pay more

They pay 45%, and going by the budget figures, a lot of them do pay this.

Why can't people learn from history, we tried high taxes in the 70s, how did that work out for us?
