acrylic splashback

I was thinking of acrylic splashbacks in my kitchen instead of the ugly tiles I have with a stainless steel sheet behind the hob. There would be about 5m of it between the worktop and wall cupboards.
How durable is it liable to be?
Roughly how would the cost compare to tiling? Tiles seem expensive but the installer would have to cut the acrylic round several sockets.
How flat does the backing have to be? Do I need to take the tiles off?
