But ignoring convenience and cost, I still don't understand how I determine whether specific rcd characteristics are required for different appliances.

Type A for most items.
If they require something else then it's the manufacturer specifications / instructions, and if they want something like a Type F, B or whatever then good luck with that, as such items are not typically available for domestic consumer units.
