Adding a programmer to existing system

Thats not what you want that is a two channel programmer ie heating and hot water .
You have a combi boiler and you want a single channel clock ie only heating as your boiler should be wired that when ever the tap is turned on HW comes on anyway.
So horstman C17 is what your after.

If you have boiler wiring diagrams it is a straight forward job

You haven't said what basic control you currently have.

But the addition of a room thermostat with a timer (called a programmable room thermostat) would be very useful and give energy saving potential. It would fulfill the functions of a programmer and thermostat in one box.

The best ones available IMHO are Honeywells' CMT927 (radio wire free) and CM907 (needs a cable).
