Hi,

We had a complete new central heating system installed by a reasonably large, long established, local (Aberdeen) firm last year ( all new: Bosch Greenstar Combi, pipework, radiators, trvs, timeclock( Drayton LP711)).

When they quoted for the work we asked for a room thermostat to be fitted but we were advised that this was "not necessary as there are thermostatic valves on the radiators".

Now the warm weather is here it's patently obvious it is necessary. How hard is it to add a thermostat into the system. Is a reasonably competent electronics engineer capable of doing it? If not what sort of cost am I looking at?

Any advice / tips appreciated

Thanks

It's not terribly difficult to do but your large long-established firm really should be aware that it is in fact a requirement of the regulations to install a room thermostat, and therefore they should have done so.

Thanks Muggles,

it is in fact a requirement of the regulations to install a room thermostat, and therefore they should have done so.

they should also not have taken over 2 weeks to diagnose a fault with the pressure regulator on the meter (diagnosed by someone in England via this site in less than an hour) or connected the radiator return pipe to the gas inlet on the boiler.

Oh and we checked the "engineer" they sent was GasSafe before we let them start!!

Thanks again.

Not only necessary, it is compulsory.

Technically, (legally) speaking, it is a job for an electrician since the introduction of the part P nonsense. Unfortuantely, most electricians are useless when it comes to ch, which makes the logical choice a RGI.

We don't do quotes on here for various reasons, so the best I can do price wise is £15 -£115 for materials plus about an hour's labour.

I strongly recommend a programmable roomstat in stead of a standard one. The Siemens REV24RF is the best imho and therefore not the cheapest.
