I have put new ceiling lights up today in the front and back rooms. Faced with nine wires in the ceiling. three red, three black (one with a red sheath) and three earth. I googled and found that the three red should be bundled and seperated off together. I fixed the earths to the light fitting, the two black to the neutral fitting and the black with red sheath to the live fitting.
Electric back on and all worked fine.

Until tonight when i took my little one up tot bed. I noticed the bottom of the stairs light did not work? Turns out the lights do work but only if i turn the living room light on and then both lights work at half power (dimmed lights) I can turn the living room light off using the passage switch! What on earth have i done wrong? See vid showing current set up.

What on earth is going on in that picture?! Why is there so much copper showing on the reds and blacks?? You need to strip about 5mm not 50mm!

Not being funny but that looks downright dangerous.

What has happened is you've connected something up wrong. Post some photos of both new fittings. I recommend if your wiring looks anything like it does in that photo, you turn the power off and leave it off.

Hiya, thsnks for your reply. The copper has since been trimmed after taking this picture. So there are no bare wires showing once all connected up. The reds are bunched together and put in the white plastic connector. The black with red sleeve that you can see is seperate and connected to the live. I put this pic here to explain the wiring I had. Hmm so back to the drawing board then. Will dismantle lights tomorrow and try again.

The hole in the base is way too small for the number of wires, needs a grommet too, the wires have already started to chafe.

I have not changed the switches. The hole in the metal casing is small, made for one cable really but having three I had to strip back. The wires are now coming through a single sheath so nothing is rubbing against the metal casing. This picture is prior to me starting the work.
