Hi - my boiler just started a VERY loud whistling sound when I am running hot water. I have researched on this forum and believe that it is the gas/air ratio that needs adjusting. Does anyone know how long it would take an engineer to fix this ? Just trying to figure out weather I should try and get a one off repair from British Gas (from £79 for 30mins) or should go straight to Baxi. ... Thank you.

Why not get a local engineer in to fix it rather than giving your money to the big companies? £79 is a lot for 30 minutes, that's very close to what I'd charge for two hours and I bet I'd do just as good a job.

You haven't said what boiler you have. I can only assume that it's a Baxi, but that's like me telling you my car is a Ford. You know who made it, but you know nothing of the model, age, or specification. A bit more info would be useful. Some Baxi gas valves can't be adjusted at all, whereas others are very simple to adjust.

In that case call Baxi out for a fixed price repair - there are known issues with this boiler and it could need a new gas valve, a new PCB, and/or a software update. They should do at least some of the work under warranty, assuming of course that you've had it serviced annually

Thank you for your advice. Very much appreciated. By the way, the boiler only makes that sound when the hot water is running but not when the heating is on. Is there a reason for it (if you can even say without looking at the damn thing I suppose...)

Hot water makes the boiler run at max to get as hot as possible as quick as possible.. As said previously get baxi out under warranty providing you've had it serviced.......
