I have moved and employed an alarm specialist. He had to put in a new socket piggybacked off an existing socket so that the control panel could be plugged in. He then told me he didn't have certification and had expected to find an existing socket in the hall. I trust his competency I watched very carefully but the more I think about it I wish I had used an electrician. How can I rectify this problem of lack of legitimacy?

Surely an FCU would have been better? Not seen many professional alarm panels that require a plug, but some cheaper DIY domestic ones to as do some of the more consumer grade wireless ones.

My concern would be that it the new socket could be a spur of a spur, what tests did he do to confirm it wasn't? I am not a spark but I have installed my own alarm system so did a lot of research into different panels etc.

Hi Joydivision,

Okay it is a domestic wireless installation. To tell you the truth I was a bit surprised but he was recommended to me by a close family member and I was led to believe they were all the rage now! When you say spur of a spur do you mean an extension of an extension?

thanks

He probably doesn't need to be registered with a Competent Persons Scheme for Part P, but he does need to complete a Minor Works Certificate for the installation of the new socket (and carry out the testing that goes with that).

Otherwise there could be basic errors like wrong polarity, lack of earth, etc,

Thanks for that. I am going to get an electrician in to rewire the kitchen - it currently has 16 separate lights and I'm not living in a palace. I'll get them to put something in for the alarm at the same time.
