i havent seen one of these for a while....
there have always been a problem...
u'll need to replace it madam...
not a straight forward job...

Is there anyone living in your house who prefers a cool bedroom and might have turned off the lockshield valve? (that's the one at the opposite end from the knob you usually turn to put the rad on and off... it won't have a knob on it but you can probably fit the one from the other end.
I believe small people also sometimes interfere with taps.
