I've just had a shower (Mira Sport 9.8KW) and accidentally left it on the medium setting (about 20amps drawn). Surprisingly, it was quite hot, so the incoming mains water must be warming up nicely. Are there any data to show how the temperature of mains water varies with outside temperatures? I'm in London, so I suppose that makes a difference (micro-climate etc.). The shower companies must have researched this though. Just interested in saving money.

Incoming water temperature will make little difference to energy consumption unless the difference is marked enough to allow you to use a lower power setting. Most (perhaps all) electric showers vary the outlet water temperature by controlling water flow rate through the heat exchanger, rather than turning the heating elements on/off thermostatically.

The idea of two heat settings, is just as the OP points out, when the incoming water gets warmer in summer, it allows us to use a lower heat setting. However, most people just leave it on the high power setting, and take advantage of the higher flow rate they get in summer 8)
