But chances are a 5m beam can cantilever 1.75m or so before you start running into problems.. but would be pretty spongy so may need to up size to stop it deflecting..
There's no minimum as such. It depends on the load and how the beam is generally supported. If it's a masonry pier and the masonry is definitely adequate then a 100 or 150mm bearing on a padstone is normally OK. But it does depend on the loads and supporting structure?
