Blackpool South’s Scott Benton had suggested to undercover reporters he would be willing to break lobbying rules for money

Rishi Sunak is braced for another byelection after former Tory MP Scott Benton was suspended from the Commons for 35 days over his role in a lobbying sting.

MPs approved the suspension of the Blackpool South MP on Tuesday evening without the need for a vote.


The length of the suspension means that Benton is now facing a recall petition. If 10% of his constituents sign it, a byelection will be triggered in his seat.

It would take the number of byelections held during Sunak’s time as prime minister to 11.

We don’t have a government of MPs that’s works for us, we have a government of MPs that work for vested self interest.

Back in the day you had to be aristocratic or have built up a personal fortune to become a tory MP, and local parties were responsible for selection of candidates. That has changed and central office impose candidates with no connection to the area who express the will of the party, sorry people, rather than being independent of thought and action. Then 30 pee Lee emerged and tore up the rule book.

There are some things worse than lying, including the manipulation of people to believe the country was about to be attacked. And then glibly say to the inquiry it made no difference because I (bliar) thought “ it was the right thing to do”. Shades of pooty there.

Public sector investment especially public health was better then, but his chancellor’s failure to curb the banks is a big part of our economic problems now.

Corbin got 37 per cent of the vote in 2017, he was a euro sceptic who instinctively supported leave as his voting record shows, and his economic policies were essentially levelling up. To take on the far right party that the Conservatives are b3coming you need distinctive policies to oppose them. Starmy’s copy edit paste approach might get him power this time but wont stop the shift to the right. Corbin was the wrong man for the job, a solid northern leader is needed, burnam who would get the private/ public sector balance right being the obvious choice.
