Hello...new here chaps, but today I was replacing a ceiling rose.

Turned off the RCD switch in the fuse box for the downstairs lights...I took the old one down and put the new old up, wired it identically to the old one.
Screwed the rose back to the ceiling and flicked the RCD switch back on... and bang in the RCD unit...turned it off immediately and took the rose down and unwired it all.
Transpires I have put a screw through some of the wires...since there is a big chuck missing out of the screw.
Having separated all the wiring I can see and isolated each one from one another...and bought a new RCD unit in case the old one was damaged..now NONE of my downstairs lights will come on...although I know there is some power to the wiring downstairs cos I inadvertantly left the new RCD switch to on and just had one last little look at the wires, and got a little reminder zap....
What have I done, and how can I fix it....all other circuits like sockets and upstairs lights are fine BTW...just a bit stuck...is there a fuse somewhere Behind the box thingy...
Cheers guys...

It's probably an MCB you isolated, tripped and replaced.

By screwing through a cable you've more than likely damaged a conductor.

the flash has damaged whatever cable you managed to nick and and likely melted it through, so it's now not carrying power to wherever it used to..
strip back the nicked wire and re-terminate it.

MCB ...not a sparks GaryMo mate (obviously...), so whats that mean??? Just went to B&Q and bought the 10A general lighting switch they called an RCD...
BTW, the little reminder zap scraed the bejesus ou t of me
ColJack...so essentially you think I got to get to the wires and cut/strip back to where there is no wire anymore (after the bang...), and then reattach to the ceiling rose??

Thanks lads...

MCB - Minature Circuit Breaker. It won't be an RCD (standalone) - it'll be either an MCB or RCBO. An RCBO would cost you in excess of £30 in B&Q I would suspect.

That's exactly whay ColJack means.

He's right. But unless you can pull enough slack through to see and remove the damaged section, you will either have to pull up the floorboards above and splice in a new section of cable, or partially rewire the damaged part of the circuit.

Ok lads, thanks again....I'll have to get the bathroom floor up then...Missus will be brassed off...but thanks chaps for your assistance...

:D

it's NOT an rcd.. if it was you wouldn't have gotten the little zap at all.. that's what it's there for..
