There may well be a better design yet to be created, the post isn't saying is that it's a be all and end all.
Only that the design has been copied all over the world up to press.

I'd guess that a recumbent cycle is less adaptable though. For instance, not much use on anything other than smooth surfaces?

How so? They can have suspension and there are off road versions.

Going back to the original post though, it might not have been the pinnacle of cycling efficiency or whatever, but it has proven to be a damned good effort, replicated the world over.
