Why display a topic with some posts missing?

What is the reason, as in both why and what was the reasoning that went into the decision to do it?

Who benefits from it? Why is it better for the reader to see posts 30, 33, 34 & 35 displayed like this with a little note saying that there are more posts to display?

I triggered this by replying to post #30 in a thread, i.e. replying to the one which was at the foot of p2.

So having done that, how does it help me, in what way is it better for me, to be presented with a page which is 2 of 3 and yet contains posts from p3?

It is making you aware that posts follow yours. 9 times out of 10 this would occur when you reply and someone replies at a similar time. It is trying to help. If you are replying to something on page 2 when you know page 3 already exists then it isn't presenting a major issue as you already know there are subsequent posts.

No, that's not it.

Here's another example:

At the time of writing there are no posts after my #63. Not one, let alone 17.
