No ants in the house, so far this year, but....
I've just been watching them out on the slabbed patio, I laid a decade or more ago. I watched one in particular, which took hold of a body of something, and over the course of 20 minutes, it managed to tow the body over 10 feet to what I assumed was the nest. It seemed to drag it a foot or two, leave it, then circle round the body a few times, then go back and drag it a bit further - the whole process repeated numerous times over, but always dragged in the same general direction. When it finally disappeared down a joint, I assumed that was the nest, and smothered it in ant killer powder.
Earlier in the week, at a different spot on the patio, we spotted thousands of ants circling round a joint in the edge of the patio. Many of them were flying ants, which I have never seen before, so that area got a good dose of ant powder. That seemed to work, none seen there since.
At the very front of the drive, I spotted more of them, circling around a tiny hole in the drive, marked by a pile of excavated soil, several weeks ago. Every few days, I've given them a good sprinkling of the ant powder, around the obvious nest, but they seem unaffected. Each time I check, there seems to be just as many around the hole. This morning, I checked it out again, having sprinkled the powder yesterday, and what I saw was a circle around the hole, where the powder had been cleaned away, and an outer circle where the powder was still in evidence - as if they are living on the powder, and welcoming the regular donations.
