I've had a look at this. The two types are ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

Ethylene glycol has a SG of 1.11 and propylene glycol has a SG of1.04, which to me are very close values so surely the tester for one can give an good indication for the other?

We have Autochem Red (OAT) in our cars and I use a Silverline 427656 tester which is for ethylene glycol as is Autochem Red as far as I know. I do 33% mix.

Strange how propylene glycol is less toxic but seems to be used less.

The science of coolants is becoming beyond most of us, I feel.....
'Er indoors has a 19 plate Honda HRV 1.6 diesel, which specifies OAT coolant to be used, but without the 2-EHA additive that most OAT's have  (label underneath the bonnet)
Apparently the OAT stuff is particularly suitable for hard water areas but the 2-EHA is an acid which dissolves gaskets
So now we know!
John :)

I use a refractometer in work that has both scales next to each other. There’s so little in it that it makes little difference.
