Any advice please as drainage system blocked?

Hello I'd be so grateful if someone could explain what might be going on in my drainage system.
I live in a terraced house and noticed the water level in my gulley was raised yesterday. My dad tried 'plunging' it but the level just rises again. There are also 2 manhole covers (one large and one smaller one which is screwed down) which when lifted are also nearly full to the top..eek! I'm so worried that it will all pour into my garden! A friend is going to try to rod them today but I am struggling to understand what could be happening. There are currently no obvious problems indoors but I am avoiding using any water atm...that's tricky with visitors here! The washing machine is very smelly but I don't know if that is relevant.

You have a blockage between the manholes you have looked in and the local authority main sewer. If you are not on a main sewer system then it's a blockage between the manhole and your septic tank - or you tank is full and its outlet is blocked.

Pushing a plunger down the line might simply exacerbate the problem. However pushing rods down with no plunger on might just get the system freed.

The next move is to get in the power jetting guys such a dynorod or the local equivalent.

Just at risk of stating the bloomin' obvious, the sewage system within your street is blocked, and the contents are backing up.
Basically the effluent from your house exits to an inspection chamber (man hole) close by, and this then drains to another chamber and finally to the large main sewer.
The chamber outlets need to be rodded (or jet blasted - but stand back ) starting with the chamber farthest from the house. Once this one clears, there's a good chance that the one nearest you will do the same.

Get onto your Local Sewerage Authority - who send you the bills - it`s probably their responsibility . Don`t give any more ££££ to Centrica ( Dyno Rod ) than you have to

Thank you all so much for the information! This morning the levels don't appear to have risen despite usage of the loo which is baffling us somewhat!
Will see how the rods go and then consider next course of action.

Thanks Nige F for suggesting contacting local water authority. They have been out this afternoon and cleared it. They now just have to come back and find the plunger which fell off when helpful mate tried to use rods! I think there's a lesson to be learned there.

Lets hope they don't charge you for finding and removing the plunger from the rod.
