Ay about 8pm in the evening,(just dark enough) a steady light appears in the sky approx. SE at about 20 degrees elevation. It moves towards South and at 11pm is approx SSE about 30 degrees elevation. What is it?

Tried it once but realised I just had stars in my eyes. I'll get me telescope.

At a guess I'd say it was the planet Venus (sometimes called the evening star).

I checked using Celestia, and Jupiter seems to fit the bill. Venus would be below the horizon.

Jupiter has been the brightest thing (after the moon ) in the south/south-east sky for a while now

With just 10x binos you will see its smooth orangey round shape, unlike a star, and you can see at least four of its moons as little dots around it.

747 coming into land at heathrow, brightest light in the sky!

venus

brightest light in the sky

Not now its not.

Its a bit dim currently and only visible in the morning sky nearing sunrise at this time of year, and will only brighten up in December, but still not evening visible this year

It cant be the ISS niether, I watch that last night cross the sky.
It travels easterly and at quite a pace, covering horizon to horizon in around 4 mins:cool:
