Good Evening All,

As I need to replace my consumer unit Ive been looking for a new place to put it as at the minute I have the old, OLD cartridge style thing.

Anyway, I completely overlooked a spot I could relocate it to about 6 inch below where it is now. A new one would fit easily in the space and the meter tails wouldn't need to be extended either so win, win.

My question is, There is a gas pipe running from the meter outside straight across the bottom of this proposed location. (cupboard under the stairs). I know the meters need to be a set distance apart but is there anything I need to be aware of when getting the new CU fitted?

Regards

Gas service pipes must be at least 150mm from electricity meters, controls, electrical switches or sockets, distribution boards or consumer units and at least 25mm from electricity cables.

Thanks for your help once again Derry. I might as well have you on speed dial :D

Glad to help, it can be found in the following standard:
BS 6891:2005 installation of low pressure gas pipework in domestic premises (clause 8.16.2).

Unless you seperate them with insulating material...and that could simply be with insulating tape....since it's not defined.

Indeed - and it's all a little odd (should I say 'silly', or 'daft'?!) given that all cables, and most CUs/switches etc. are already 'well insulated', so it's a bit hard to see what an extra bit of PVC tape would achieve!

Kind Regards, John
