This rather sums up the state of school leavers, in my experience.
Have to disagree there to a certain extent..ive worked in training with the CITB and colleges for the last 7 years.
One of the things I used to do was careers talks and evenings in schools.
I also conducted somewhere in the region of 400/500 odd interviews with potential trainees prior to their placement with companies
The standard of the kids who were interested has fallen year on year..
No disrespect to the parents of the kids or the kids themselves that are entering the trade now....it was easy to make the blanket judgement at the time that all kids are a bit dense...and not like we were.
But it isnt the case...its the type of kids that the building trade are now attracting, with some obvious exceptions,...kids who were like us some thirty odd years ago are now doing other things for far better money.
Call it lack of guidance but these kids are going to places like B an Q Mac Donalds, computing jobs...telesales etc...they can earn good money as opposed to being stuck on anything from 50-120 quid a week on an apprenticeship
Those sort of jobs wernt about when we left school...and lets face it, wy are most of us in the trade?...becasue we didnt have many other options...we were the type that were 'good with our hands'...and that was more or less it...we didnt have the capacity for A levels etc...it was either the building game..or what?...factory work, shops..menial job...we didnt leave school with the option 'shall I become a doctor or solicitor...or shamll I go in the building trade?'.
The quality of the kids entering the trade has dropped but kids in general are just as bright.
