are there breathable alternatives to plasterboard available?

Im having to remove the coombed ceilings in an old property to allow insulation to be fitted. Plan to resheet with some form of breathable board. Is standard plasterboard ok or is there other well known breathable boards out there?

I don't see really the benefit of plasterboard being breathable. In fact, the opposite is more beneficial. Vapour pressure is always higher on the inside of a building therefore breathable plasterboard allows vapour migration into the structure which is not desirable.

Agree with Jeds, why would you want all that moist air leaking into the cold space.

It's what Duplex (foil back/vapour check) boards were invented for.
