It does mean that whoever works on any part of the AC installation will know instantly what's what, no need for oversleeving, no investigative work if a sleeve falls off, etc.

How much more is it, and how much are they paid per hour?

In the north of Ireland it will still be brown, black and grey (as work should be carried out to BS 7671:2008 (2013)). In the south of Ireland 3-core & Earth cable is not available to the best of my knowledge. Flex may be one of the exemptions to the Rule (although I would need to check my copy of the National Wiring Rules to confirm that).

Interesting. That must be a bit of an inconvenience - it presumably means that you will often have to use two cables for 2-way light switching, and will always have to use two cables for things like timer fans.

It seems a bizarre situation.

Not allowing any cables with an unsleeved earth I could understand, but to allow twin & earth but forbid 3C+E makes no sense.

Why? Twin brown and Earth is available for switches/strappers. So there's no contradiction there as all cores are identifiable throughout their length.

Yes, but what when one needs three live cores - it sounds as if you have no option but to use two cables?

I suppose you could have 3C+E with three browns, and another version with two browns and a blue, but both could be a bit of a pain to use. The conductors might well be identified as line or neutral throughout their length, but, the functions of the multiple browns would not be identified anywhere!

Just use single brown. You still only need strappers between switches (i.e. one twin brown).

Do you use (and have easy access to) DI singles, then, or is all the wiring in earthed conduit?

Yes, if you use the 'old-fashioned' arrangement of 2-way switching (and don't mind the additional 50Hz radiation which comes from having 'unbalanced current' in the cables). But what about the timer fans etc. - do they have to have two cables?
