ASBESTOS DISPOSAL COST (garage roof)

I bought a roll of DPM and parcel tape to double wrap mine, a lot easier for big sheets.

On the subject of costs, I read something about the government stopping LA's from charging householders for these extra services as they believe it's contributing to fly tipping.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm hoping my son will help me with my garage (he did volunteer). But it will probably take longer than 2 hours, nothing in my house has ever been straightforward!

I don't think H&S is misplaced with asbestos - it's generally acknowledged to be dangerous stuff.

It seems the £350 mentioned is the kind of sum to be saved rather than leaving it to the builder? - and just avoid the firms who quote £1000+.

I just need two fine days (or a big tarp), hard to predict in the UK and a bit too hot at present. Or two clued-up guys who would probably also take two days. I'm possibly out of touch but I price a guy at about £250/ day so £1000 labour and change from £2000 for the entire job including materials - does that seem a reasonable ballpark figure? A shame that a new roof will last longer than me - ditto these long-life bulbs!

Regards.
Remove them yourself but keep them intact. Pay a company to dispose of them for you.

Where in London are you?

I’m SE and have a number for a company that did mine.

Why would he do that when his local authority will collect it and take it a way free of charge?

my Council won't accept it but have a tie-up with the Corporation of London who will collect it
But that amounts to the same thing.

I had to dispose of some asbestos cement sheets from our previous house (and a different London council) some years ago. They put me on to the Corporation of the City of London and the chap I spoke to was willing to talk and explained the position.

Legislation says that councils must arrange for the removal of reasonable amounts of asbestos but, like most legislation, it does not define reasonable. Councils can do it themselves or contract it out. At that stage CCL had the contract for all but one of the London councils so the chap had to hand the different interpretations of reasonable; some were by weight, some by area and some a combination of the two.

So I double wrapped it in DPM, taped all the seams, left it out the front and it was collected for free.

My current council has an asbestos skip at one of the dumps, things have to be double wrapped and you need to show ID, etc. Then they unlock the skip and let you put stuff in it.

search the local tips that will accept it, many about. You need to purchase bags in which to place it (I bought mine from ebay)
You give your details to the council as you have to make an appointment to drop off the bags (they also ask for ID) and you are limited to the number of bags per drop (mine was 5 so I did 3 trips).
They prefer that you keep the sheets in as large a size as to fit the bag rather than it being in lots of little shards.

All this about "special waste" is boll cocks if it's a domestic dwelling. HSE table to prove they are trying to extract wealth.
That link is just a table of domestic and non domestic premises. Nothing whatsoever to do with appropriate removal and disposal.

For anyone with a similar query, my neighbour asked a licensed contractor to quote for his garage roof replacement (our garages are paired). They don't bag up the asbestos but take it directly to a facility in Swindon - I believe the charge is £350. They replace the roof with metallic sheets insulated on the underside and complete the job in a day. The cost is £2700 for one garage or £2100 each if both garages are done together.

Are those prices reasonable?? - I must admit I was expecting a quote less than £3000 for both. My rough guesstimate was 2 guys for one day @ £500, disposal @ £400, materials @ £1000? + profit? Have I missed any major costs?

In all this talk I'm surprised those mentioning self-removal haven't mentioned three "musts": you must damp down asbestos you are removing to prevent the dust and fibres becoming airborne, you must use a FFP3 dust mask and you must not cut, drill or snap the stuff if at all possible.

Its been covered loads of times before but people don't bother looking. With asbestos if you don't know what your doing leave the stuff alone and get someone in who does.

I'm in the process of doing the apex roof on my summer house, with box section steel sheets, which is likely larger than a single garage, and the slope makes working on it much more difficult - though no asbestos to remove...

Materials cost me a little over £400, and I managed most of the instal is around 4 1/2 today, with some assistance, to pass things up.

I replaced my very large asbestos roof several years ago, it was a relatively easy job, done is about 5 hours.

Every few months, I get a mail shot addressed to 'The Occupier', from a company which claims to specialise in asbestos roof replacement. I suspect they use google earth, to spot addresses with flat garage roofs. The frequency of such mailings, suggests there is big profit to be made in such work.
