I have a garage approx. 16ft x 8ft with an asbestos roof that I wish to replace. Approx. how much would a builder pay to dispose of the asbestos? (I ask because my Council offers free asbestos removal to householders so I might possibly save on the cost of the job).

Regards.

PS Am I thick?? - I look for a similar thread expecting the opportunity there to post a new thread so that it's in the right forum. But there isn't that option?? I've posted threads before but I forget the procedure and always have this problem. My apologies if this thread is in the wrong forum.

I would think a builder removing and disposing would be a minimum of £1500 - possibly more? An asbestos skip on its own is seven or eight hundred quid.

It's perfectly safe to do it yourself if you can. Use the correct ppe and look up the safety procedures for removal. Double bag and tape the material and take it to your local tip.

Thanks for your reply.
I would expect the builder to remove it and bag it up (even if I supply the sheets & tape) so I was just wondering about the actual disposal cost. My local council has a tie-up with another and they actually collect it for the house owner, probably after the builder has finished. It seems specialist asbestos removal firms wear full "space suits" for this kind of job - I would hope that a builder is also very careful?

Was a company on Facebook from Yorkshire that took my neighbours garage roof 2 years ago for £550. Took 2 hours. They travel all over UK as we are SW. Following day guys were in Scotland removing asbestos. All licensed.

They had one price of £2000 I was told

Thanks for your reply.
My local council has an arrangement with the Corporation of London and suitably wrapped asbestos, up to 15 sq. m., is collected free of charge. 2 hours is quick work? I'd hope to use a builder who removes it with care and not use demolition tactics - I don't want a heap of asbestos dust within my garage. In fact I wouldn't mind doing it myself with some help and suitably protected.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an asbestos skip, I'm assuming it's for unwrapped asbestos? The guys who collect it probably turn up in a truck as the asbestos has to be double wrapped and taped.

2 hours is quite possible, depending how it goes. Mine was easy, just crawled around it (On the rafters), and undid the big flat head screws. Then down onto the trestles, and pull the sheets out 1 by one. They were bloody heavy, but came down intact and ready for me to double wrap and tape.

An asbestos skip is just a skip, but the company must have a asbestos carrier license.

Good old H &S, I remember in early eighties i when I took my garage down, held my breath and used lump hammer to break in small enough pieces to put in 3 x 4 trailer. Down to local land fill tip and dropped off in pile of other household waste which was then picked up and taken to main site for burial. Cost nothing, not allowed these days but now in my seventies and not invincible anymore I doubt whether I would go down that route these days. Dismantled sons small shed 4 year years ago , double bagged it and dumped in local authority asbestos collection skip for £80, asbestos company wanted £1500 to do the job.

I removed mine similar size, just wear the correct ppe and take it slowly. I paid £350 for the sheets to be collected and disposed of by an approved asbestos removal company.

They also provided me with the paper work to say was disposed of correctly.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm hoping my son will help me with my garage (he did volunteer). But it will probably take longer than 2 hours, nothing in my house has ever been straightforward!

I don't think H&S is misplaced with asbestos - it's generally acknowledged to be dangerous stuff.

It seems the £350 mentioned is the kind of sum to be saved rather than leaving it to the builder? - and just avoid the firms who quote £1000+.

I just need two fine days (or a big tarp), hard to predict in the UK and a bit too hot at present. Or two clued-up guys who would probably also take two days. I'm possibly out of touch but I price a guy at about £250/ day so £1000 labour and change from £2000 for the entire job including materials - does that seem a reasonable ballpark figure? A shame that a new roof will last longer than me - ditto these long-life bulbs!

Regards.

To describe an asbestos skip as just a skip indicates some lack of understanding. It isn't the physical skip itself, it's the disposal of the waste that costs the money. All asbestos is classed as 'special waste' and must be disposed of at a licenced facility. A skip company or a local builder can't just take it to the local tip for nothing. So, a skip company might deliver you what looks like a standard skip but disposal costs (for them) will be high. As I said, dispose of it yourself at a fraction of the price.

search the local tips that will accept it, many about. You need to purchase bags in which to place it (I bought mine from ebay)
You give your details to the council as you have to make an appointment to drop off the bags (they also ask for ID) and you are limited to the number of bags per drop (mine was 5 so I did 3 trips).
They prefer that you keep the sheets in as large a size as to fit the bag rather than it being in lots of little shards.

All this about "special waste" is boll cocks if it's a domestic dwelling. HSE table to prove they are trying to extract wealth.

No, as I said my Council won't accept it but have a tie-up with the Corporation of London who will collect it provided it's double-wrapped and taped up. By the way I think my Council has been bankrupt 3 times, surprised they haven't spotted a money earner.

Thanks jeds, that was my original question. How much would I save if I arranged disposal vs (probable high?) costs a builder would have to pay?

Regards.

An asbestos skip is just a skip, but the company must have a asbestos carrier license.

So what I said then? Here, you pay more for the collection of the skip if it contains wrapped asbestos, as the company has to fill in some forms, and the driver has to 'suit up' to enter the disposal facility. After that, you pay the dumping fee for the asbestos, at whatever weight it was according to the weighbridge (£200 a tonne for low risk asbestos, £600 for high risk).

I feel I have understood it quite well, having completed the process twice
