    HI All,

Does anybody know whether its likely that old storage heater contain asbestos?

I may have a job to remove about 30 of the lovely little fellas, (booking into the chiropracters now, just in case) various types, probably 20-25 (ish) years old. I don't really want to have to open each one to find that there may be some present.

Its probably too easy to expect a nice little website where you can type in the heater model and get an answer, but i live in hope :)

Michael: You must be a very strong chap if you think you can man-handle a storage heater without dismantling it and removing the bricks?

If those heaters are less than 25 years-old, they're quite unlikely to contain asbestos. They will have an 'asbestos type equivalent' blanket just behind the front panel, but this isn't harmful.

Put it this way: what would you do if you were called upon to replace just an element, and not the complete heater? You'd have to remove the front panel and the first course of bricks to gain access to the faulty element, would't you?

    Lucia.

lol, i bet the Egyptians wouldn't have worried about such small detail., but thanks for your concern.
Thanks, just got back from a site visit and have list of all models, which will be checked through soon(ish). Rang a few asbestos removal companies, to get a ball park price. That was quite amusing, especially the last bloke - £500ea. :) I haven't put him on speed dial.
im familar with changing elements, but there are 27 old to remove and new 30-35 to install, if i can bag them up inside, sack truck em out (me and my mate together, about 36 stone, should be ok with that) asbo people can pick them up (if necessary, or a walk in skip if not)from courtyard, my labour time goes down, asbo ****** wont have my pants right to the ankles, customer thinks im wonderful, everyones happy ;)

I think the £500 to remove each heater is fair if they are taking the whole lot, those things are a right royal pain in the backside to mess around with and the chiropractor booking is essential. Good luck with the job and although I would love some extra work, rather you than me doing that one!
