Asbestos sheet replacement - warm air unit cupboard

If you stick with PVA it will soak in slightly and stabilise the board as well. To gloss paint it you should key it first to make sure it adheres. Not a good idea on an asbestos sheet.

Gloss Paint will be ideal.

White asbestos is made from Chrysotile, a relatively harmless material compared to brown or blue asbestos.

It should not be cut or sawn but if you are worried about it, you can bag it up and take it to your local tip.

There are other sheet materials available to replace it with. The health risks of the fireproof replacement board are not yet proven.

I would leave it as it is, but paint it if you are worried.

Asbestos removal is a specialist job and if you undertake it yourself you could be putting your, and your families, health at risk.

Just as you do every time you go out in the car, though the car is a much bigger risk..

Tell that to someone whose nearest and dearest has just passed away due to mesothelioma. There are enough risks to our health every day without exposing yourselves to unnecessary ones.

Same disproportionate response as those in the US who are trying to make schools nut-free. While there are a handful of deaths per year from nuts, there are a few thousand from bee stings, ten thousand from sports injuries and several times that from automobiles. Then there is the truly nutty attitude of parents emptying the cupboard of peanut butter, while making sure they retain their guns in the house.

If asbestos was that much of a problem to the wider population and not just those working with it, every body over 30 should be dead scared, as vehicle brake linings were made from asbestos and loads of it was wafted into the air every day.

If you are happy to expose yourself to a risk then fair enough but it is irresponsible in the extreme to recommend that others do so. Have any of us seen this asbestos? If unsure it is better to err on the side of caution than put anyone at risk.

I've worked with asbestos in boilers plenty of times in the past and, unwittingly, put myself at risk. Asbestos is now the biggest workplace killer in the UK.

Really? I thought it was falling from heights on construction sites. But then how good are the statistics? But never mind, smoking and alcohol are doing much better.

Tell that to my mates widow after he fell through an asbestos sheet roof after nipping out for a fag and landing on a cate of empty beer bottles

I would suggest that the risk from asbestos insulation is totally different to the risk from a sheet of asbestos and would always recommend that it be disposed of in a safe way if talking to a member of the public, and I would never get involved with asbestos insulation... Sheet is a totally different animal and a bit of common sense goes a long way.. When my asbestos garage had to be demolished, I got the dragon to spray it with water whilst I set about it with a hammer... It now safely resides under my living room.

Hi all,

I have a warm air unit that lives in a cupboard in my hallway , when i was having it serviced , the engineer noted that i had an asbestos sheet screwed to the inside of the cupboard door ( presumably the inside of the door gets hot because of the hot warm air unit inside ) ....

Anyway , he recommended that i replace this with a sheet of Eurostone , but i can't find it . If i Google Eurostone , i get marble replacement stuff and tiles and what not ...

Does it have a trade name ? or could you recommend anything to replace it with ? basically , something fireproof that will prevent the door getting too hot ... the cupboard door is about 2 x 3 ft and i would need to be able to cut a hole in it as there is an air intake vent in the cupboard door.

Many thanks in advance

Has a sample been sent for analysis ,only when microscopically examined by a qualified person can it be definitively identified as asbestos . A heating engineer is only making an assumption, until positively identified you can't be sure, may turn out to be supalux :?: :)
