I sent my money off a week and abit ago to get registared with NIC, How long does it normally take to get your pre-site assessment to the onsite assessment to getting registration?

How long did it take for you?

Hi mst,

I registered with the NICEIC back last year sometime, and once all the paperwork was sorted I got an appointment about 10 weeks later.

That was last Wednesday and apparently I am competent :o

Just waiting now for the registration paperwork, but the guy who attended said I should leave it a couple of weeks before chasing them.

In my case, the assessment was pretty straightforward - the two jobs were both CU changes and the main thing he was checking was that I knew how to carry out the tests for the certificate, with priority on Ze and ring continuity.

Hope that helps,

Gavim

It does thanks gavin,

10 weeks! i hope they can get me in for assessment sooner

Hello again mst,

Once I had submitted the flat and house addresses , I received a letter back @ 5 weeks later.
The letter came through on 23-10 and the assessment was on 13-11.
So about 7 weeks from start to fail with me.

Read up , and do as much testing as you can is my advice. Double check the sites, and the best of luck to you.

Yours
Mr Incompetent.
(Therefore inadequate for, or un'suited' to a particular purpose or application. And seeing as I don't wear suits I must be devoid of those qualities requisite for effective conduct or action.   )

Never mind, worse things happen at sea.

ps Did you see my reply on your smoke alarm certs, please have a read.

Cheers.

ello eddie.....

I didnt know it was your assessment that ya failed, real sorry to hear that .

i thought it was just your DIS assessment that you "nearly" failed by making a simple mistake.

So i wasnt aware that it was your big assessment that went booboo up.

Are you going to apply again?

Was you able to get ya 400 quid back or little less or is it out the window?

Hello MST,

I have put my tools away in the garage http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q304/EddieCurrent/SpottheBall.jpg , the meters getting flogged and I am looking for work as an electricians mate again.
I am going to keep on learning, and do a 2391 course when I feel more confident but purely as a hobby, as I enjoy it.

I have not contacted the NIC about a refund, they will probably worm their way out of it anyways. :o

I do wish you the best with your assessment mate.

Nothing to do with me but i say go for reassessment!

Should be fine next time and its to much money to loose. Thats what there for.

cheers

Hi mst,

I was working with an electrician I knew and ,(he answered the assessor)I was not exactly the 'brains' of the 'outfit', and have not done enough testing to be truly confident to do all the tests, (without taking ages and getting the books out).
I will get the exams needed and have a think about it then.(starting up on my own etc)
Meantime its either 'major project' work, as a mate where the long hrs etc, can make the money up, or getting a start with a decent spark, I like a bit of graft so if I help them out 'properly' they usually see me alright !

Sorry to hear that Eddie,

Maybe I was lucky then, because someone else on my EAL VRQ course described his assessment as a grilling.

With mine I had the feeling that I would have had to electrocute myself in front of him for him to find a fault!

It was quite instructive too in that when he asked me to do a ring continuation test I isolated the whole CU and removed the ring cores to test, at which point he said 'you can put the lighting back on if you want' :)

I would certainly consider going for a reassessment (although they do charge for another visit)

Gavin

They only grill people who are hesitant or unsure. If you are confident in not only what you are doing practically, but also confident in your knowledge, it will come across to the assessor.

Hi,

I only met up with the assessor on the second job, and to be honest he seemed a little arrogant to me, (his reply to my initial 'good morning' was 'well we dont know yet, do we' etc) after this I stayed out of the way and to be honest I was very anxious.(I really wanted to pass obviously).

However, he did say the work was of a 'good standard' but told us finally that he could not let the 'fans' go, (quite rightly), and was sorry but there was no option other than a fail.

I understand that I could have changed the fans, and had the same properties assessed, but in my opinion that does make me competent, it just means I have put my mistakes right.

Anyways, back to the job hunting.

The worst bit of my assessment was in the 'office' before we did site visit

Usual paperwork crap - customer compalints log etc.

Site visit was a bit daunting as it was a bit like sitting an exam with teacher looking over your shoulder.
I did have a long discussion with assessor about cooker outlet with 13 amp socket not being on RCD side. My arguement was there were outside sockets fitted and sockets in the conservatory and to connect the cooker socket to outside equipment would involve walking past 3 sets of free sockets all on RCD side.
And TBH I'd done such a neat job of wiring CU to move cooker cct to RCD side would mean renumbering and make it look untidy.
In the end a 'not for use for outside' sticker won the day!!
