I used to have a ticking coming from the front of my car, which was NOT related to engine/road speed.

It has stopped now, which is weird, but after 5 seconds of the car starting, some pump (dunno which one) kicks in and the the brightness of the milometer returns to normal. this pump (i assume) whistles a little bit and the note of this whistle changes when i turn the steering wheel. it is an 2003 1.4 Astra.

Anyone any ideas (apart from take it to a garage, just yet anyway)??

have you checked the fluid level in the power steering pump resevoir?

I've just had the clutch done, it doesn;t share a resovoir or anything silly like that (or is that just a silly suggestion)?
