I read this thread
And I have a similar issue. I had already put a bit of polyfiler in the gap before I thought it wasnt right.
The walls are freshly plastered and need a mist coat.
When is the right stage to do the caulking? Should I do it before I mist coat or later before I putthe final coat on?

First thing is to get some masking tape around the window to keep clean.
Top of the masking tape edge level the best you can with the side wall and top plaster.
Use purple masq tape. Probably best on market IMO.
I'd then squeeze some mixed powered filler in joint. Use toupret standard powder but mix thicker than normally and get in joint.
When dry prime will emulsion.
Pull tape
Get some window mastic or caulk. Not silicone as you can't paint over that.
Put a thin bead around the inside of window.
Really want a small tiny amount of mastic around window edging.
You could use a dark colour to match window frame.
When dry you can run masking tape if you want or not bother and paint.

To answer.
Always put mastic over a primed surface.
