Attic beams

Hello

Im in the process of sanding my attic beams (1890-1900's terraced house). Im not sure what type of wood they are (light in colour) but i am wondering if anyone could suggest what type of finish would look the best, ie varnishing or waxing/oiling?

They have to be softwood in the attic surely unless you have a very expensive house. This will be some kind of pine. Any finish will do the job, just take your pick.
