Hello to all,

At the moment we have a back boiler, a tank in the airing cupboard with no immersion heater or thermostat and one tank in the attic.

This supplies us with hot water and also the central heating.

The problem is now we have children who have morning or evening baths, we sometimes have run out of hot water with no signs of the boiler supplying anymore until he decides he wants to.

question:

Without replacing the whole system, could I replace the hot water tank for an immersion type so the tank decides when the bolier heats the water up or we could use the immersion heater?

any help would be much appreciated.

Michael

it isnt the immersion in the tank that tells the boiler to come on , it is a thermostat on the side of ythe cylinder plus heating controls , or you could use the immersion heater as well .

Is the back boiler gas or solid fuel? If gas and you only have one tank in the loft it is probably a primatic cylinder. If solid fuel it will be a long hot water recovery as you are relying on the fire.

Have you got a timeclock controlling heating/hot water? There should be a override on the clock to switch boiler on outside of timed periods.

Cylinder can be replaced, if its the 'Primatic' type then swapping for a conventional cylinder may be better, however will need the addition of a small feed and expansion tank in the loft for the heating system. This also gives the advantage of being able to add chemicals etc if the system is sludged up.
