Contact adhesives, as against impact adhesives, allow a certain amount of repositioning of the materials to be joined.
Over a large area, you need a spreader to move the glue around.
Toolstation 95550 should suit well, but Gorilla stuff is good too. Superglues aren’t the best for this sort of work.

Im a bit worried about a thick glue making the backing look bulgy though ?
 
95550 - This doesnt list plastic as something it bonds and specifically mentions not working on vinyl on the evostick website, although i guess plastic is different to vinyl so maybe thats ok?
 
Contact adhesives are good for joining non porous surfaces so I’d think all would be well.....in fact they are used on plastic laminates such as Formica.
What has been used originally?

I'd be tempeted to fully remove and paint as you might find you have the same issue again later on.I
